Alex Iwobi has revealed that Mesut Ozil doesn’t talk very often to him at Arsenal but has told him to express himself on the pitch for the Gunners.

Iwobi has earned plenty of new admirers since breaking into the Arsenal first team in the second part of last season, and has been a regular fixture in the starting line-up this term.

Ozil recently said that the young Arsenal midfielder reminds him of Jay-Jay Okocha and Edgar Davids as he lavished praise on the Nigeria international in the media.

However, Iwobi has claimed that Ozil does not talk to him that much behind the scenes at Arsenal and admits that he was surprised to hear about the German World Cup winner’s comments about him.

Speaking in an interview with Arsenal’s website, Iwobi said: “Mesut just tells me that I’m young and need to express myself on the pitch.

“Obviously I need to listen to other people’s advice as well, but he tells me to always play with a smile on my face and enjoy the game.

“When I saw [his comments comparing me to Okocha and Edgar Davids] I was like, ‘Wow is he serious?’ because he never really says that much to me.

“He just gives me advice and help, but it’s such a confidence boost for such a great player to say that about me.”
