Ander Herrera: I thought this Man United star was pranking me over Spain call
The Manchester United midfielder didn't believe that he had been called up to the Spain squad
Ander Herrera has revealed that he thought Manchester United team-mate David De Gea was pranking the midfielder when he discovered his call-up to the Spain squad.
The Red Devils midfielder was called into la Roja’s squad following injuries to Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alacantara and Atltico Madrid star Saul Niguez.
Herrera has been a regular in Jose Mourinho’s first-team in recent weeks after impressing alongside world-record signing Paul Pogba in the United midfield in the Premier League.
However, the 27-year-old couldn’t quite believe that Julen Lopetegui was drafting in the United star following a spate of injuries, particularly when he got a call from De Gea.
“I was in Madrid, staying at a hotel in Paseo del Prado for a couple of days with my daughter and my girlfriend to enjoy the city and climate,” Herrera told Goal as quoted by The Daily Mirror.
“David de Gea called me unexpectedly and I thought he was calling me for something else.
“He said, ‘Come over here.’ ‘Here? But where’s here?’ I replied. I didn’t realise at that moment. ‘Lopetegui told me that you will come with us,’ he said. I thought it was a joke, and even asked him if it was.
“I packed my suitcase really quickly, and then Lopetegui called me. I took a taxi to come to the Spain training centre as soon as possible as I didn’t want him to turn to another player who could come sooner than me.”
Herrera has never made an appearance for the Spain national team despite being a key player at Athletic Bilbao before his reported £29m move to Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal in 2014.
De Gea couldn’t resist winding up his United team-mate with a cheeky Instagram post following Herrera’s call-up as the shot stopper referred to a recent interview where the playmaker questioned the club’s number one goalkeeper’s music taste.
