Arsenal chief executive delivers verdict on Arsene Wenger

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis says Arsene Wenger and the Gunners are 'not one and the same'

Arsene Wenger is “not Arsenal” despite his long association with the Gunners, according to the north London club’s chief executive.

The 66-year-old is in the final year of his contract as the Gunners boss looks to end a 12-year wait to win the Premier League title.

Wenger signed five players in the summer transfer window as the three-time Premier League winner strengthened his squad.

Granit Xhaka moved to Arsenal in a £33m deal from Borussia Monchengladbach before Lucas Perez and Shkodram Mustafi joined the Gunners in combined deals worth £52m in August.

Arsenal are in third place and two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after five successive Premier League victories.

However, the club’s chief executive Ivan Gazidis sent out a mixed message when the American business man delivered his verdict on Wenger.

“Arsenal is not Arsene Wenger. They are not one and the same,” Gazidis is quoted as saying by ESPN FC.

“He’s clear and we’ve always been clear, it’s a mutual decision.”

Arsenal lost 4-3 to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in their season opener before a goalless draw with reigning champions Leicester City.
