Arsenal man leaves door open to possible January transfer away

Per Mertesacker hints that he may consider leaving Arsenal in the next few months

Per Mertesacker has hinted that he could consider leaving Arsenal in the January transfer window.

The defender has not featured for the north London club so far this season after missing the opening few weeks of the campaign with a serious knee injury.

The German suffered the problem in pre-season training and is now working on getting back to full fitness as quickly as possible.

However, Mertesacker’s injury prompted Arsene Wenger to dip into the summer transfer market and bring Shkodran Mustafi to the club from Valencia.

Mustafi has impressed alongside Laurent Koscielny in the heart of Arsenal’s defence and it appears that Mertesacker will have a fight on his hands to break back into the first team.

Now, the World Cup winners has hinted that he may start considering his future in the next few months.

Speaking in an interview with German publication Kicker, as quoted by ESPN FC, Mertesacker said: “I know that I need to allow myself time. The more time I allow my knee, the longer I’ll be able to play football.

“I can increase the workload already and I am no longer in pain.

“I believe that I can reach a level again on which I am important for the team. I have the feeling that this is not the end.

“I look at the perspectives for me and my family, and I think that I’ll intensify those thoughts from January on.

“That’s also the time when you can listen to other things [offers] when your contract is expiring.”
