Arsenal star thrilled to see his ‘best mate’ back in action

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is thrilled to have helped Carl Jenkinson through his recovery from a knee injury

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed his delight at seeing Carl Jenkinson make his return to action after his long lay-off with a knee injury.

The defender had his loan spell at West Ham United cut short last season after suffering a serious knee problem, which ruled him out of the remainder of the campaign.

Jenkinson mades his return to first-team training with Arsenal last month as he bids to regain his full fitness and stake his claim for a place in Arsene Wenger’s first team.

It has been a testing period for the full-back since suffering the problem and Oxlade-Chamberlain is thrilled to see him close to making a comeback.

Speaking in an interview with Arsenal Player, Oxlade-Chamberlain said: “I’m delighted to see him even doing as well as he’s doing now. “Obviously he’s had a really bad injury, when you do your cruciate it’s one of the worst injuries you can do. So mentally, it’s always hard to take.

“The time it takes to recover is hard and obviously because I’m his best mate I’ve seen him the whole way through his recovery and I’ve almost been there every step of the way so I know his ups and his downs, how he’s felt the whole time and how hard he’s worked more than anything.

“He’s gone through different sorts of stages and mindsets I think. Everyone has their own ways of dealing with the disappointment of being away from football and I think Carl dealt with it really well because he’s obviously someone who’s extremely passionate about his football.”

Arsenal are currently in third place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City heading into the international break.
