Paul Merson states prediction for Arsenal v Middlesbrough

The Arsenal legend is backing Arsene Wenger's side to ease to a comfortable victory over Middlesbrough

Paul Merson is backing Arsenal to suffocate Middlesbrough at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners were 6-0 winners against Bulgarian side Ludogorets in the Champions League on Wednesday night as Germany international Mesut Ozil scored a second-half hat-trick.

Arsenal have won their last six Premier League games to leave Arsene Wenger’s side level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City after eight games.

Former Gunners midfielder Merson doesn’t expect Middlesbrough to cause the north London side any problems in their Premier League clash at The Emirates this weekend.

“Arsenal are irresistible at the moment,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“Swansea could count themselves a little unlucky last weekend, but the way the Gunners played in the Champions League showed that confidence is high at the Emirates.

“Middlesbrough are struggling, they’ve got little pace in the team and up front, and I’m going 4-0 Arsenal. They’re going to suffocate them, and I just don’t see how Boro will get out of their half.

Merson added: “I really hope Arsene Wenger doesn’t start changing the team, because that’s dangerous, they’re on a right good run at the moment, and you’d like to think he’ll keep the same team.”

Arsenal have already beaten Watford, Hull City, Southampton, Burnley and Swansea City this season.

The north London side’s most-impressive victory came in a 3-0 win against bitter rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium last month.

Wenger’s side only Premier League defeat so far was a 4-3 loss to title rivals Liverpool in their opening game of the campaign.

Arsenal are top of their Champions League group after Wednesday night’s landslide win.
