Arsene Wenger comments on new Arsenal signing’s impact this season
Arsene Wenger delivers his verdict on Shkodran Mustafi's impact at Arsenal so far this season
Arsene Wenger has admitted that he has been very encouraged by the partnership Shkodran Mustafi has struck up with Laurent Koscielny in the heart of Arsenal’s defence this season.
The pair both helped the Gunners keep a clean sheet on Wednesday night as Wenger’s men ran out impressive 6-0 winners over Ludogorets in the Champions League at The Emirates.
Mustafi has slotted straight into the Arsenal team since signing for the Gunners from Valencia late in the summer transfer window.
The Germany international was brought in after both Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker suffered injuries early on in the season.
And the Arsenal boss is pleased by what he has seen from his new centre-half pairing so far this term.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Wednesday night, Wenger said: “They [Mustafi and Koscielny] have been very interesting and very efficient.
“They have a good understanding and overall we are good defensively, but sometimes it’s not because our defenders struggle.
“It’s because we are an offensive team and the structure of our team is very offensive, so when we do not really focus on defending we become vulnerable. Our structure focuses more on attacking than defending.”
Arsenal are preparing to take on Middlesbrough at The Emirates in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners are currently joint-top of the top-flight table.
