Arsene Wenger compares two Arsenal players and their performances
Arsene Wenger discusses Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud's roles in the current Arsenal team
Arsene Wenger says Alexis Sanchez has been performing well up front in the absence of Olivier Giroud but believes that the French striker can add another dimension to Arsenal’s game.
Sanchez has been deployed to lead the line for the north London side in recent games in the absence of the injured Giroud and has earned plenty of praise for his performances.
Giroud is currently sidelined and is still at least two weeks away from a return to action for the Gunners, meaning that Sanchez is likely to start up front in the coming games.
And Wenger has compared the two players’ style when deployed up front, claiming that both offer a different style to the team.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Thursday, Wenger said: “I think from game to game he [Sanchez] is improving in this position. It’s completely different style to Giroud, but… he’s more dribbler, a guy who comes to the ball, a guy who runs at people with the ball.
“Olivier is more a game who brings other players in. They are two interesting styles. For example, in a game like a Burnley when we couldn’t score you would’ve liked to have had Olivier with you.
“People always ask you why does he not play, but if you only one striker to go in the team people say as well why don’t you have another striker? You cannot play with one. We have as well Lucas, who is doing very well. Welbeck is coming back.”
Arsenal head into Saturday’s clash with Swansea City in third place in the Premier League table and three points behind leaders Manchester City after seven games of the season.
