Arsene Wenger sends blunt warning to Arsenal midfielder
Arsene Wenger now wants to see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain deliver on a consistent basis for Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has told Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that he must now prove that he is the finished article and earn a regular spot in the Arsenal first-team.
The former Southampton starlet has failed to hold down a regular spot in the Arsenal first team at The Emirates despite showing plenty of promise in recent seasons.
Oxlade-Chamberlain scored both of Arsenal’s goals as the Gunners eased to a 2-0 victory over Reading in the fourth round of the League Cup on Tuesday night.
The midfielder also featured during the 6-0 thrashing of Ludogorets in the Champions League earlier this month.
And Wenger believes that Oxlade-Chamberlain must now show him that he has the consistency to be able to earn a regular spot in the Arsenal side.
Speaking at his post-match news conference on Tuesday night, Wenger said: “He is not a young player anymore, he is now 23 and at 23 you become a football player who is the finished article.
“Before 23, you learn your job. At 23, you become more consistent, you know what’s expected of you, you know how to deal with the pressure, with the situation, with the competition inside the squad. But he was so talented, so young.
“In the national team, so young. People forget that he was still a young player.”
It remains to be seen whether Oxlade-Chamberlain will be in the starting line-up when Arsenal take on Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime.
