Arsene Wenger: What I’d like Mesut Ozil to do more for Arsenal

The Arsenal midfielder needs to shoot more often, according to Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger says Mesut Ozil doesn’t shoot enough after the midfielder scored in Arsenal’s 3-2 win against Swansea City on Saturday.

The Germany international has scored three goals in seven Premier League appearances in the 2016-17 campaign so far after finding the back of the net against Watford, Chelsea and Swansea.

The 28-year-old, who celebrated his birthday with a goal on Saturday, netted eight times in 45 appearances in all competitions last season – his best return since a club-record £42.5m move to The Emirates from Real Madrid in August 2013.

But Arsenal manager Wenger challenged Ozil to shoot more often as the Frenchman hailed the World Cup winner as one of the north London club’s best finishers in first-team training.

“When you see Ozil finishing today, you think a little bit that he doesn’t take his chances to shoot enough,” Wenger told his post-match media conference on Saturday evening.

“When you see him in training, he scores basically when he wants. You speak with the keepers and he’s one of the most difficult players to predict where he’ll put the ball. In the game, I’m happy that he gets goals and I hope that gives him the taste to try more.”

Ozil has scored 23 times in 124 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal during his three-year stay at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are in second place in the Premier League table but level on points with leaders Manchester City.
