Charlie Nicholas defends Jose Mourinho over Man United assessment

The former Arsenal man felt Manchester United were improved against Stoke despite 1-1 stalemate

Charlie Nicholas agreed with Jose Mourinho’s assessment of Manchester United’s performance in Sunday afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Stoke City.

The Red Devils were the dominant side in the first half but Stoke’s third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant denied Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard to keep the scoreline all square.

Mourinho introduced Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney in the second half and the France striker took just two minutes to break the deadlock with a superb finish at Old Trafford.

However, David De Gea’s uncharacteristic handling error allowed Wales international Joe Allen to level the Premier League clash despite United’s dominance.

Mourinho was adamant that United deserved more from the Premier League clash after producing their best performance of the 2016-17 season so far.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas felt that Mourinho was right in his assessment of United’s performance against the Potters.

“I thought Manchester United played OK, and I wouldn’t totally disagree with Jose Mourinho’s optimistic outlook after the game,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“Sometimes he looks to camouflage bad performances, but in this one they created plenty of chances. They didn’t always use the ball well, but they played with a purpose and an energy that was threatening, the only thing was, they weren’t clinical enough.”
