Paul Merson states prediction for Chelsea v Man United
The former Arsenal midfielder is backing Chelsea to beat Manchester United at Stamford Bridge
Paul Merson is backing Chelsea to ease to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
The west London side have won their last two Premier League games to leave Antonio Conte’s side in fifth place in the table.
Chelsea were 3-0 winners against defending champions Leicester City at Stamford Bridge last weekend thanks to goals from Diego Costa, Eden Hazard and Victor Moses.
United played out a dour goalless draw with their bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night as the Red Devils managed to contain Jurgen Klopp’s attack.
Former Arsenal playmaker believes Chelsea will manage to succeed where Liverpool failed and penetrate the United defence at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
“I’m going to go 1-0 Chelsea. I think they’ll have just a little bit more than what Liverpool had in attempting to break United down,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“I don’t think they’re good enough to mix it at the moment. I think Jose Mourinho knows that, he set his team up, and they didn’t lose. It was a great result.
“He will 100 per cent do the same at Stamford Bridge. If they have a shot, and Chelsea have a shot, there’s only one winner, and that’s Chelsea by quite a few. Mourinho won’t go there and want to open the game up in that way.”
Jose Mourinho is returning to Chelsea for the first time since he was sacked by the west London club in December.
The Portuguese coach was named as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May after United finished in fifth place in the Premier League table.
