Phil Thompson states his prediction for Chelsea v Man United
Phil Thompson looks ahead to Chelsea's clash with Manchester United on Sunday afternoon
Phil Thompson is expecting Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United to adopt another defensive approach when they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea this weekend.
The Red Devils were widely criticised for setting out to contain Liverpool in their goalless draw at Anfield last week.
The Portuguese coach set his team up to keep Jurgen Klopp’s men at bay and it ended up being a very disappointing game for fans.
Mourinho is now gearing up for his first return to Stamford Bridge since his sacking by Chelsea in December of last year.
And former Liverpool star Thompson feels that the Red Devils are likely to adopt another defensive approach this weekend.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Thompson said: “I think Mourinho will go at it with the spoiling approach again. He’ll be very pleased with the way it went at Anfield.
“The inclusion of Ashley Young was a strange one but his positional play was excellent and I think he’ll play on Eden Hazard’s side this time.
“However, I just don’t think Mourinho is able to get away with it twice. It’s OK doing it once but it’s very difficult to get the same set-up and the same results when the other team know exactly what to expect.”
Chelsea finished in 10th place in the Premier League table last season and without a trophy, while United finished fifth and won the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal, before the Dutchman was sacked and replaced by Mourinho.
