Dietmar Hamann states prediction for Crystal Palace v Liverpool
The former Liverpool midfielder is backing Christian Benteke to come back and haunt his former club
Dietmar Hamann is backing Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke to punish his former employers Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening.
The Belgium international moved to the London side in a £27m deal that could rise to £32m in the summer after he was deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield.
Benteke was signed by Brendan Rodgers in a £32.5m deal from Aston Villa in 2015 but he struggled to tie down a regular starting spot under the Northern Irishman’s successor Jurgen Klopp.
The towering striker left the Anfield outfit after a return of nine goals in 29 Premier League appearances in the 2015-16 season.
Former Liverpool midfielder Hamann is worried that Benteke could come back to haunt Klopp and his players at Selhurst Park in Saturday’s late kick-off in the Premier League.
“This one might come as a surprise, me not picking a Liverpool player,” Hamann wrote in his Paddy Power column.
“But I do really like Palace as a team and think they look pretty good this season. Benteke hit the bar against Leicester last week and had a decent header cleared off the line.
“It’s a shame it didn’t work out for him at Liverpool because he works hard and looks like a different person now he’s at Palace. He is a beast on his day and it will be interesting to see how the Liverpool defenders handle him!”
