Ex-Chelsea man blasts Arsenal star: He is neither clever nor creative
Chris Sutton was not at all impressed by Theo Walcott's performance for England on Tuesday
Chris Sutton has launched a scathing attack on Theo Walcott following the Arsenal star’s performance for England in Tuesday’s goalless draw with Slovenia.
Walcott featured for 62 minutes against Slovenia before being replaced by Andros Townsend during the stalemate.
The Arsenal star has earned plenty of praise for his performances for the north London club so far this season to help them up to third place in the table, after goals against Chelsea and Basel.
However, former Chelsea man Sutton was less than impressed by Walcott’s performance for England in midweek as he delivered a scathing verdict on the 27-year-old.
Speaking in an interview with The Daily Mail, Sutton said: “All the fuss about Theo Walcott this season — I don’t get it.
“People are saying he is a changed player. He is neither clever nor creative and he was completely ineffective once again for England.
“The Arsenal man has no guile and didn’t link up at all or put any decent crosses in all night. His pass appreciation is desperately poor and his defensive clearance just after half-time summed his night up.
“Everyone has credited Gareth Southgate for having the courage to drop Wayne Rooney, but he needs to learn fast and leave Walcott out.
“Andros Townsend was far more effective in his 28-minute cameo.”
Walcott will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action after the international break with a home clash against Swansea City this weekend.
The north London side have won their last five games on the spin and currently trail leaders Manchester City by two points.
