Former Liverpool defender issues warning to Jurgen Klopp over James Milner
Steve Nicol has doubts over James Milner's long-term future as Liverpool's left-back
James Milner will be found out playing at left-back in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team, according to Steve Nicol.
The former England international has enjoyed an impressive season so far despite being asked to play in an unorthodox left-back role following Alberto Moreno’s erratic performance in a 4-3 victory over Arsenal in the Merseyside club’s opening Premier League game of the 2016-17 season.
The two-time Premier League winner is quite remarkably Liverpool’s leading goal-scorer in the English top flight this term after scoring four times in six appearances so far.
Milner was particularly influential in Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium last weekend after the 30-year-old produced a dominant second-half performance which he capped with a 84th-minute winner from the penalty spot.
However, former Liverpool full-back Nicol doesn’t believe Milner is the long-term solution for Klopp’s side.
“Having James Milner at left-back,” Nicol told ESPN. “He’s been adequate.
“And eventually he’s going to get found out when he comes up against a wide player with genuine pace and genuine trickery. At the moment, he hasn’t come up against anybody like that.”
Liverpool will host their bitter rivals Manchester United in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Monday 17 October.
The Reds are in fourth place in the Premier League table.
