Gary Neville defends Liverpool hype after Jose Mourinho ‘wonder’ comments

The Manchester United legend believes the hype surrounding Liverpool is merited

Gary Neville says he isn’t surprised that there has been so much hype around Liverpool this season.

The Reds played out a goalless draw with bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Monday night as the visitors managed to limit Jurgen Klopp’s side to three shots on target despite the Merseyside outfit scoring nine times in their previous two home games.

United manager Jose Mourinho delivered a withering verdict on the 18-time English champions following the goalless stalemate at Anfield after the outspoken Portuguese coach insisted Liverpool weren’t the “last wonder of the world”.

However, Neville, who won eight Premier League titles at Old Trafford during a decorated career, insisted that it is natural Liverpool have garnered some attention following impressive victories at Arsenal and Chelsea this season.

Asked if he had been guilty of over-hyping Liverpool, Neville told Sky Sports on Monday night: “I don’t know about that.

“The Liverpool team in the first half looked to me like they’ve been watching the build-up for five days and it had got to them. They didn’t handle it very well in the first 25 minutes.

“In terms of building them up, when you win away at Arsenal and Chelsea, you are going to attract attention. I think that’s what has happened these last few weeks.”

Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points adrift of leaders Manchester City after eight games.
