Gary Neville explains why Man United aren’t ready to win title

The Manchester United legend says Jose Mourinho needs more time

Gary Neville believes Jose Mourinho will require a couple of transfer windows before the manager has a Manchester United squad capable of winning the Premier League title.

The Red Devils appointed the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager as Louis van Gaal’s replacement in May after a disappointing fifth-place finish under the Dutchman.

Mourinho signed Villarreal defender Eric Bailly, Borussia Dortmund playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba in the summer.

United are in seventh place and five points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after a goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night.

And Neville, who won eight Premier League titles during a decorated Old Trafford career, warned that Mourinho needs a couple of transfer windows to fix the problems in the United squad.

“I want to be clear before the headline becomes ‘Gary Neville says Jose Mourinho can’t win the Premier League title at Manchester United’,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“There have been three or four bad transfer windows and it is going to need more than one transfer window to unlock that. His team has gone up in his estimation at Anfield.

“We knew how Jose Mourinho wanted to play but where his players capable of it? They’ll have have gone up in his estimation in terms of resilience, concentration and focus.

“When I say they’re not ready at this moment in time to win the title, I mean in terms of the next step, which is the jump in quality that is required. That could take another one or two transfer windows.”
