Gary Neville: How Mauricio Pochettino has transformed Tottenham
The Manchester United legend heaps praise on Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Gary Neville says Mauricio Pochettino deserves credit for getting rid of the deadwood in the Tottenham Hotspur squad after transforming Spurs into Premier League title contenders.
The Lilywhites were impressive 2-0 winners against leaders Manchester City in their most-recent Premier League game ahead of the international break thanks to Aleksandar Kolarov’s own goal and Dele Alli’s first Premier League strike of the season.
The north London side are in second place in the Premier League table and a point behind Pep Guardiola’s side after seven top-flight games. Tottenham are the only club left in the Premier League yet to suffer a defeat in the 2016-17 season so far.
Pochettino took over the reins of Tottenham from Tim Sherwood in 2014 after the former Argentina international impressed during his 18 months in charge of Southampton.
The 44-year-old has sold Tottenham stars such as Emmanuel Adebayor, Roberto Soldado and Paulinho during his two-and-a-half seasons in charge at White Hart Lane.
And former Manchester United defender Neville hailed the job that Pochettino has managed to do so far at Tottenham.
“The job that he has done. When you remember the mob that he picked up when he got here – the likes of Adebayor, Kaboul and Paulinho,” Neville said on the Gary Neville podcast.
“There is no way they could play at the level that Mauricio Pochettino wants. The speed and the energy.
“Now, inside two years, the transformation [at Tottenham] – even last season. It is a brilliant coaching and recruitment job. We’re hearing less about Daniel Levy and more about the coach.”
