Gary Neville makes reluctant admission about Liverpool this season

Gary Neville delivers his verdict on Liverpool's Premier League title hopes this season

Gary Neville has admitted that he has been forced to consider Liverpool as genuine Premier League title contenders this season.

The Reds have made a relatively strong start to the new campaign under Jurgen Klopp as they seek a return to the Champions League via a top-four finish this term.

Liverpool had beaten the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Leicester City ahead of Monday night’s frustrating goalless draw at Anfield as Klopp’s men failed to break down their bitter local rivals on Merseyside.

The Merseyside outfit sit fourth in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City after eight games of the new season.

And the former Manchester United defender concedes that he has had to reassess his thoughts on Liverpool this season after their strong start.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Monday night’s game at Anfield, Neville said: “It pains me to say it but I’ve been more impressed by Liverpool [this season than United].

“Liverpool scare me a little bit. I never thought that at the start of the season I’d even thinking of them as title contenders. However, I watched them at Arsenal and watched them at Chelsea – and when you win away at those two grounds, you are seriously thinking about yourselves as being up there as contenders for the title.

“They’ve got free runs week in, week out. They haven’t got the confusion of Europe. The way Jurgen Klopp’s teams play, I think they need those free weeks because of the energy they put into the games.

“They are a far bigger threat, in my mind, than they were at the start of the season.”
