Gary Neville hails Chelsea's clean sheet mentality after their 2-0 win at Southampton
Gary Neville hailed Chelsea’s clean sheet mentality after their 2-0 victory over Southampton on Sunday.
Antonio Conte’s side broke the deadlock inside six minutes at the St Mary’s after Eden Hazard scored his fifth Premier League goal of the season with a superb solo strike after evading two Southampton players.
Diego Costa is Chelsea’s leading goal-scorer in the English top flight this term and the Spain international extended the west London side’s lead with a clinical finish in the 55th minute to take his tally to eight in the 2016-17 campaign so far.
And former Manchester United defender Neville picked out the aspects of Chelsea’s performance that really impressed him on Sunday as the Blues won their fourth successive Premier League game without conceding a goal.
“I think sometimes you’ve just got to hold your hands up and say, ‘they were better’,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“We didn’t play badly, we didn’t do a lot wrong, we just faced a better team who were organised and didn’t make a mistake. Chelsea had concentration and focus. Chelsea didn’t put a foot wrong.”
Neville continued: “The clean sheet mentality right through the team is the big thing for me. They look really determined.”
Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Southampton hoisted them above Tottenham Hotspur and into fourth place ahead of their clash against Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
The Blues are a point behind leaders Manchester City and their fellow pace-setters Arsenal and Liverpool after 10 games.
