Gary Neville: Why I’d accept Jose Mourinho not winning title with Man United this season

The Manchester United legend analyses Jose Mourinho's objectives for the 2016-17 Premier League season

Gary Neville says he would accept Manchester United not winning the title this season if Jose Mourinho builds a squad capable of being crowned Premier League champions in 2017-18.

The Red Devils are in seventh place in the Premier League table and six points adrift of leaders Manchester City and second-placed Arsenal after eight games.

The 20-time English champions ground out a goalless draw with top-four rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night as Mourinho adopted a conservative approach.

United were initially talked up as potential title winners after the former Chelsea manager led the Red Devils to three successive Premier League victories over Bournemouth, Southampton and Hull City at the start of the season.

However, Mourinho’s side lost to Manchester City and Watford in September to quell talk of a title challenge.

Speaking on Sky Sports after United’s goalless draw with Liverpool, Neville discussed what he would be willing to accept as a supporter in Mourinho’s first season at Old Trafford.

“We’re [Gary and Ryan Giggs] are Manchester United fans,” said Neville.

“If Jose Mourinho came out tonight and said we might not win the Premier League this season but we’ll win in next season, which is what he said at Chelsea, I think we’d accept that.

“As long as he does win it next season!”
