Glenn Hoddle: This Arsenal striker class act

The former Tottenham manager is a big fan of out-of-favour Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud

Glenn Hoddle has talked up Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud as a “class act”.

The France international was sidelined for the Gunners’ goalless draw with promoted side Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Giroud is currently nursing an injury, although the former Montpellier striker has found his first-team opportunities limited this season.

The 29-year-old is also facing increased competition for a starting spot from Arsene Wenger’s £17m summer signing Lucas Perez.

Former Tottenham manager Hoddle is a fan of Giroud and believes the French striker has a role to play in Wenger’s side despite the form of Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott.

“I think Olivier Giroud looks at times a class act. You can put balls in. Arsenal get in great positions at times but can’t get a cross in playing Alexis Sanchez as a false number nine,” Hoddle told BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show.

Giroud finished as Arsenal’s top goal-scorer last season after a return of 15 goals in 38 Premier League games in the 2016-17 campaign.

Arsenal signed five players in the summer transfer window as Wenger revamped his squad following a second-place finish last term.

Granit Xhaka, Perez, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Takuma Asano all completed deals with the north London club.
