Graeme Souness offers Jose Mourinho advice on Man United signing Paul Pogba
Graeme Souness believes that Paul Pogba would be more effective in an advanced position for Manchester United
Graeme Souness has told Jose Mourinho that he should try and deploy Paul Pogba in a more advanced role for Manchester United to get the best out of the France midfielder.
Pogba has struggled to produce consistent performances for the Red Devils since his arrival at the club from Juventus in the summer transfer window.
The 23-year-old continues to split opinion about where he is most effective on the pitch for the Red Devils as Mourinho tries to get the best out of the club’s record signing.
Pogba has been deployed alongside a host of different midfield partners at Old Trafford so far this season but it is clear that Mourinho is still working to find out his best position.
And former Liverpool star Souness wants to see the Frenchman deployed in a more advanced role for the Red Devils.
Writing in his column for The Sunday Times, Souness said: “I’m not convinced Paul Pogba has found a position he is entirely comfortable with within the systems Mourinho has deployed.
“If he is going to have the impact his price tag demands then he needs to be getting ahead of the ball.
“At the moment, he is too often behind it. Let Michael Carrick play that role; it’s what he’s good at.
“I want to see Pogba play more in the mould of Dele Alli or my old teammate Terry McDermott — a raiding midfielder.”
Manchester United take on Manchester City in the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday.
