Graeme Souness reacts to Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham
The Liverpool legend has his say on Tuesday night's 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur
Graeme Souness praised Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge after Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup.
The Liverpool striker returned to Klopp’s side on Tuesday night after he dropped to the substitutes’ bench for their 2-1 win against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League at the weekend.
Sturridge opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a close-range finish at Anfield after Marko Grujic’s shot was deflected into the path of the Liverpool centre-forward.
The England international extended the home side’s lead with another good finish in the second half to leave Liverpool on the edge of qualification for the League Cup quarter-finals.
However, stand-in Liverpool captain Lucas Leiva controversially fouled Argentina international Erik Lamela with 14 minutes remaining and Vincent Janssen halved the deficit from the penalty spot to offer Tottenham hope of a comeback.
The former Liverpool captain felt that Klopp’s strikers made the difference against Tottenham after a comfortable win.
“Liverpool seemed to find another yard,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“The best team won. Daniel Sturridge alone had eight attempts on goal.
“What separated the two teams was that Liverpool had Origi and Sturridge up front.”
Tottenham are in fifth place in the Premier League table ahead of the visit of defending champions Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool are in third and level on points with leaders Manchester City.
