Graeme Souness believes Tottenham Hotspur have a superior defence

Graeme Souness doesn’t believe there is much difference in terms of quality between the Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur squads.

The Gunners managed to hoist themselves above their north London rivals and into second place in the Premier League table on Saturday afternoon thanks to a 3-2 win against Swansea City at the Emirates Stadium.

Tottenham, on the other hand, dropped points at the Hawthorns Stadium as Dele Alli scored a late equaliser to cancel out Nacer Chadli’s opener in a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion.

But Mauricio Pochettino’s side are the only unbeaten Premier League club left in the 2016-17 campaign and the Lilywhites are the only team to beat Manchester City after a 2-0 win against Pep Guardiola’s side at White Hart Lane earlier this month.

Speaking to Sky Sports following the weekend’s Premier League action, former Liverpool captain Souness declared that Tottenham had the superior defence but the north London sides are evenly matched overall.

“Pochettino has done very well. He inherited a fabulous situation and they’ve added to it,” Souness said.

“I disagree with Thierry Henry, I think it’s close [in terms of whether Arsenal or Spurs have a better squad].

“I think Tottenham have a better back four. Midfield and going forward from that then it’s debatable who’s better. Arsenal can ping it around on a good day as well as anyone.”
