Ian Wright admits confusion over new Arsenal signing

The Arsenal legend doesn't understand why Lucas Perez isn't getting more first-team action

Ian Wright admits he is surprised that Lucas Perez is struggling to get into the Arsenal team.

Arsene Wenger signed the Spanish forward in a £17m deal from La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna in the summer transfer window as the Arsenal manager bolstered his attacking options.

However, Perez has started one Premier League game since his big-money summer move, lasting a mere 62 minutes of the north London side’s 2-1 win against Southampton last month.

The 28-year-old centre-half opened his Gunners account in the League Cup in September after the Arsenal signing scored twice in a 4-1 win at Nottingham Forest.

Former Gunners striker Wright has spoken of his surprise that Perez has barely featured for Wenger’s side.

“I don’t know what’s happened with Lucas Perez. He has bought him for £17m and he isn’t playing,” Wright told BT Sport.

However, Wright conceded that Chile international Alexis Sanchez is the best candidate to lead Wenger’s forward line given the forward’s current form.

“Alexis Sanchez is the best person who can be up there doing that [leading] role out of everyone Arsene Wenger has at the moment,” Wright added.

Sanchez has scored four goals and has made three assists in eight Premier League games so far this season.
