Ian Wright: This Liverpool star enjoying new lease of life
The former Arsenal striker delivers glowing verdict on Liverpool vice-captain James Milner
Ian Wright has hailed James Milner’s renaissance after the Liverpool vice-captain’s switch to left-back in the Premier League this season.
Jurgen Klopp started with Alberto Moreno for Liverpool’s opening Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium but the Spanish defender struggled badly despite the Merseyside club easing to a 4-3 win against Arsenal.
Milner was restored to the German’s starting line-up for Liverpool’s trip to Burnley, and despite a 2-0 loss at Turf Moor, the vice-captain has continued at left-back in the club’s subsequent five Premier League games.
Remarkably, the 30-year-old has scored four times in six appearances in the English top flight in the 2016-17 season so far, including his winner in a 2-1 victory over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium last time out.
Former Arsenal striker Wright lavished praise on Milner’s impressive form under Klopp in an unorthodox left-back role.
“James Milner has a new lease of life at left-back,” Wright told The Sun Goals podcast.
Liverpool are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table and three points behind leaders Manchester City.
The Reds will host bitter rivals Manchester United in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Monday 17 October.
