Ian Wright: Why Man United’s Jose Mourinho should get more credit

The Arsenal legend launches a defence of the Manchester United manager

Ian Wright insists Jose Mourinho deserves more credit for nullifying Liverpool’s attack in Manchester United’s goalless draw at Anfield on Monday night.

The Merseyside outfit had scored nine goals in their previous two Premier League games at Anfield this season thanks to a 5-1 victory over Hull City and 4-1 victory over defending champions Leicester City.

Only Arsenal and Manchester City had scored more goals than Liverpool ahead of Monday night’s stalemate.

Mourinho managed to contain Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge as Liverpool registered just three shots on target.

However, United finished with just 35 per cent possession following their defensive approach to the north-west derby.

But Arsenal legend Wright had no issue with Mourinho’s tactics at Anfield ahead of United’s trip to his former club Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

“Jose Mourinho should get credit for taking the sting out of them,” Wright told The Sun Goals app.

“We thought Manchester United wouldn’t be able to cope with the Liverpool onslaught.

“We thought Manchester United wouldn’t be able to deal with the press which didn’t happen.

“Jose Mourinho went there and he played it perfectly.”

Liverpool are in fourth place and two points behind leaders Manchester City and second-placed Arsenal after eight games.
