Jamie Carragher blasts Man United star after Chelsea thrashing
Jamie Carragher was not impressed by Chris Smalling's performance for Manchester United against Chelsea
Jamie Carragher has criticised Chris Smalling for his below-par performance in Manchester United’s thrashing at the hands of Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
It proved to be an afternoon to forget for the Red Devils after they were torn apart by Antonio Conte’s men in west London in what was an uncomfortable return to Stamford Bridge for Jose Mourinho.
Smalling did not have his best afternoon in west London as goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante helped Chelsea secure a thumping win over their Premier League rivals.
However, former Liverpool defender Carragher singled out Smalling for being particularly at fault for Kante’s goal in the second half at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Carragher said: “That from Chris Smalling is not good enough. It is so poor.
“No disrespect, I’m a massive fan of Kante, but he is not Eden Hazard. To let him walk past you from there is embarrassing.
“Smalling’s had a poor day – he was possibly at fault for three of the four goals that Manchester United conceded.”
Manchester United now turn their attentions back to the League Cup and their clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
