Jamie Carragher defends Man United star ahead of Liverpool showdown
Jamie Carragher has his say on Wayne Rooney's situation ahead of Manchester United's trip to Liverpool
Jamie Carragher has branded some of the recent criticism aimed at Wayne Rooney as “embarrassing”.
The England skipper has found himself under the spotlight in recent weeks for his failure to perform on a consistent basis for both club and country.
Rooney was dropped to the bench for England’s clash against Slovenia on Tuesday night after he was booed at Wembley during the 2-0 win over Malta over the weekend.
The forward has also found himself on the bench for Manchester United in recent games after failing to consistently perform for the Red Devils.
However, Carragher agrees with Gareth Southgate’s decision to drop Rooney this week and says that the criticism aimed at the Manchester United star has been completely over the top.
Carragher told The Daily Mail: “I totally understand [the decision to drop Rooney].
“It will also be better for Wayne, as some of the criticism has been so over the top it’s been embarrassing. No matter how strong mentally you are, it will take its toll.
“He rightly started in Slovakia. It was the toughest game on paper, Sam Allardyce’s first game, he played with three midfielders and he wanted that experience plus he was in better form than Dele Alli.”
Rooney will be hoping to earn a starting spot for Manchester United when the Red Devils travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool on Monday 17 October.
United are aiming to bounce back from their 1-1 draw with Stoke City last time out.
