Jamie Carragher delivers glowing verdict on Man United midfielder
The Liverpool legend praises Juan Mata for his consistency at Manchester United
Jamie Carragher has highlighted Juan Mata’s consistent performances for Manchester United since his move to Old Trafford.
The Spain international scored a second-half winner in United’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday night.
Mata has netted three goals and has made one assist in 12 appearances in all competitions under Jose Mourinho in the 2016-17 season so far.
The former Valencia winger was sold to the Red Devils in a then club-record £37.1m deal from Premier League rivals Chelsea in January 2013 after Mourinho deemed Mata surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
The World Cup winner scored in the FA Cup final under Louis van Gaal last term as the Red Devils won their first piece of silverware since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher heaped praise on Mata following his winner in Wednesday night’s derby.
“He’s played almost 115 games and he’s been involved in nearly 50 goals,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“Sometimes he gets criticised here because Manchester United are used to pace, flying wingers and counter-attacks. He’s a number 10. What number 10 does have pace? Very few.
“He’s never injured, he gets goals and assists – he delivers. Since his come from Chelsea, he’s done his job. He’s always delivered.”
Mata has scored 29 times in 115 games in all competitions for the Red Devils since his move to Old Trafford.
