Jamie Carragher delivers verdict on Jose Mourinho and Man United

The Liverpool legend delivers verdict on Jose Mourinho's start as Manchester United manager

Jamie Carragher says Jose Mourinho will be desperate to secure the first significant victory of his Manchester United reign at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils appointed the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager as Louis van Gaal’s replacement in May after United finished in fifth place behind Manchester City.

Mourinho made a promising start after the 20-time English champions eased to victories over Bournemouth, Southampton and Hull City before a 2-1 loss to Pep Guardiola’s side at Old Trafford.

United’s most-impressive Premier League result under Mourinho so far was a 4-1 victory over defending champions Leicester City last month.

However, former Liverpool defender believes Sunday’s Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge represents a huge chance for Mourinho to build the club’s confidence.

“There is much riding on the outcome of this collision for Mourinho. When he arrives at a club, he usually applies the finishing touches and helps teams make that final step to win titles, like at Chelsea and Real Madrid, or the Champions League with Inter Milan and Porto,” Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“His task at Manchester United is different, trying to get them from fifth to first place, and the way they have started under him has been different, too. There have been some early bumps in the road and results have been unspectacular.

“He is still looking for that first convincing win and the change may take longer than some would anticipate, even if some United fans fancied their chances of winning the league this season.”

United played out a goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night.
