Jamie Carragher: How Ander Herrera has transformed Man United
The Liverpool legend was impressed with Ander Herrera's influence on the Manchester United midfield
Jamie Carragher says Ander Herrera has made a big difference to Manchester United in recent weeks.
The Spanish midfielder was named man of the match on Monday night after his dogged performance helped the Red Devils secure a rugged goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield .
Herrera has enjoyed a run in the United first-team since making just his second Premier League start of the 2016-17 campaign in a 4-1 win against defending champions Leicester City at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old retained his place alongside world-record £89m signing Paul Pogba in a 1-1 draw with Stoke City before the goalless stalemate with the bitter rivals.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Herrera has added another dimension to Mourinho side’s playing in a holding role in the United starting line-up.
“His influence was a lot bigger than the first half. Gary Neville touched on it in commentary,” Carragher told Sky Sports on Monday night.
“Manchester United completely controlled the midfield area and nullified Liverpool. It isn’t just this game, remember.
“We spoke about Fellaini and Pogba as a pair in the Manchester City game, it didn’t look right. Since Ander Herrera has come in, that area of the team has looked a lot better.
“It isn’t a case of the most expensive player in the world Paul Pogba suddenly changing that.
“It was the introduction of Ander Herrera alongside Paul Pogba in a sitting midfield role has made a big difference to Manchester United.”
Herrera has scored one goal in nine appearances in all competitions for the 20-time English champions so far this season.
United are in seventh place in the Premier League table after eight games so far this season.
