Jamie Carragher makes prediction about Tottenham and Liverpool midfielders
Jamie Carragher believes that both Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson are candidates for England captain
Jamie Carragher believes that Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson could both be candidates to succeed Wayne Rooney as England captain.
Rooney’s situation with both club and country has been under the spotlight in recent weeks following his stuttering form on the pitch for Manchester United and England.
The Manchester United captain was jeered during the 2-0 win over Malta at Wembley on Saturday and was then dropped to the bench for Tuesday’s clash against Slovenia.
Rooney has also struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the Manchester United team since Jose Mourinho’s appointment at Old Trafford.
Liverpool star Henderson has been picked to take over from Rooney as England captain for the time being.
And although Carragher feels that was a wise decision from Gareth Southgate, he feels that Tottenham star Eric Dier or Manchester City defender John Stones could also be candidates to take the armband in the long term.
Speaking in an interview with The Daily Mail, Carragher said: “Southgate is right to pick Henderson for now because he’s one of the few players who captains his club.
“It’s the right choice for Gareth because he’s in charge for the next three games, but if England then get a new manager who is looking long term, then Dier or Stones could be in with a shout, because Jordan is not an out-and-out guaranteed starter for this country.”
