Jamie Carragher reacts to Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Man United
Jamie Carragher wasn't surprised with Jose Mourinho's conservative Manchester United tactics
Jamie Carragher insisted Jose Mourinho’s conservative tactics didn’t surprise the Liverpool legend after Manchester United left Anfield with a goalless draw on Monday night.
The Red Devils managed to tame an in-form Liverpool side in the first half as England international Daniel Sturridge was muted on his return to Jurgen Klopp’s starting line-up.
The Reds manager brought on Adam Lallana for Sturridge in the 60th minute and the former Southampton captain injected some much-needed energy into the Merseyside outfit.
Emre Can’s low shot forced an instinctive save from David De Gea before the Manchester United goalkeeper pushed Philippe Coutinho’s powerful shot wide.
The Brazil international teed up his compatriot Roberto Firmino with a deflect flick but United right-back Antonio Valencia made a last-ditch tackle to deny the Liverpool forward a shot on goal with eight minutes remaining.
And Carragher praised Mourinho for successfully concocting a plan to nullify Liverpool’s prolific attack after Monday night’s stalemate at Anfield.
“I didn’t expect that performance from a Manchester United team – especially in the second half,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “But you expect it from a Jose Mourinho team.
“How many times has he done it? There isn’t anyone better in world football as a manager at nullifying the opposition and stopping a team [than Jose Mourinho].”
Liverpool will host West Bromwich Albion in their next Premier League game at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
United, meanwhile, will make the trip to Mourinho’s former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
