Jamie Carragher reveals what Gary Neville told him about Man United star

Jamie Carragher discusses the role Wayne Rooney has to play in the England team moving forwards

Jamie Carragher has revealed that Gary Neville sees Wayne Rooney as the man who connects all of the different age groups together in the England squad.

Rooney has found himself in the headlines in recent days after being booed during England’s 2-0 win over Malta at the weekend and then being dropped for Tuesday’s clash against Slovenia.

Much has been made of Rooney’s form in recent weeks and the forward has also struggled to produce consistent performances for Manchester United this season.

There has been much debate about the attacker’s best position and whether he will ever regain his top form for club and country.

However, Neville says that all of the players in the England squad look up to Rooney and see him as the man who gets on with all of the age groups, according to Carragher.

Speaking in an interview with The Daily Mail, Carragher said: “He [Rooney] still has a part to play and will still start games for England.

“But if everyone is fit — and considering how poor the opposition in this group is — he may not be needed as much as he would like.

“He can still be very valuable in this squad but in a different way.

“Gary Neville told me he’s the glue that connects the different age groups together. They all admire and look up to him.”
