Jamie Redknapp explains why new Tottenham signing is struggling
Jamie Redknapp believes Vincent Janssen will struggle to dislodge Harry Kane in the Tottenham side
Jamie Redknapp believes Vincent Janssen needs a run of games in the Tottenham Hotspur starting line-up to rediscover his goal-scoring touch.
The Netherlands is still waiting to open his Premier League account after making nine appearances in the English top flight so far.
Janssen moved to Tottenham in a £19m deal from Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar in the summer transfer window to provide more attacking depth.
The 22-year-old finished as the Dutch league’s leading goal-scorer last season after the centre-forward scored 27 times in 33 Eredivisie appearances.
While Redknapp is unsure whether Janssen can avoid the comparisons to Tottenham flop Roberto Soldado, the ex Spurs midfielder believes the Dutch striker is the type of player that needs regular first-team football.
“The Tottenham fans talk about whether he is going to be another Soldado,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“The problem he has got is that Tottenham play with a system with just one up front. That one will be Harry Kane. He looks to me to be the kind of guy with his shape that needs to play regularly.
“Once he gets a goal, I think there is a player in there.”
Janssen has racked up 411 minutes in the Premier League so far this season but is still waiting to opening his top-flight account.
Tottenham will host defending Premier League champions Leicester City in their next top-flight game at White Hart Lane.
