Jamie Redknapp makes strong claim about Tottenham midfielder
Jamie Redknapp believes that Eric Dier should be named as the next England captain after Wayne Rooney
Jamie Redknapp has urged the next England manager to consider making Eric Dier the next permanent captain of the Three Lions.
Wayne Rooney’s future as skipper of the national side has been cast into doubt in recent days after he was booed during the 2-0 win over Malta at the weekend and then dropped for Tuesday’s clash against Slovenia.
Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has assumed the temporary role of England captain in Rooney’s absence from the starting line-up.
However, former Tottenham star Redknapp feels that Spurs man Dier should be in with a chance of being named as the Three Lions’ next skipper.
Speaking in an interview with The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “I would say Eric Dier [should be next England captain], although my only worry is that he is facing a battle with Victor Wanyama for his place at Tottenham.
“The England captain needs to be in the form of his life for his club.
“Alternatively, I would go for John Stones. He is such a good player and this could be exactly what he needs.
“Henderson is another option but the burden of captaining both Liverpool and England could be too great. I have no problem with Henderson wearing the armband on Tuesday but longer term I’d give it to Dier or Stones.”
Tottenham return to Premier League action this weekend with a trip to West Brom on Saturday afternoon.
The north London club are currently second in the table and just a point behind leaders Manchester City after seven games of the new season.
