Jan Molby: Why it’s too early to judge new Liverpool signing

The former Liverpool midfielder is refusing to pass comment on Loris Karius

Jan Molby is adamant that it is too early to judge Liverpool summer signing Loris Karius.

The Germany Under-21 international was the first of Jurgen Klopp’s seven new arrivals at the Merseyside outfit in what was a busy summer of transfer activity.

Karius was signed in a £4.7m deal from Klopp’s former club Mainz in May and the 23-year-old was handed the Liverpool number one shirt following his switch.

However, the former Manchester City youth goalkeeper suffered a broken hand during a pre-season game in the United States and was forced to sit out Liverpool’s opening five Premier League games.

Karius made his league debut for the Reds in a 5-1 victory over Hull City before he looked unconvincing in a 2-1 win at Swansea City before the international break.

The German shot stopper had a couple of nervous moments in Monday night’s goalless draw with Manchester United despite the Red Devils rarely threatening his goal.

However, former Liverpool midfielder Molby is loathe to criticise Karius so early into his Anfield career.

“It’s almost impossible to judge him yet, we haven’t seen enough of him,” Molby wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“At the moment he doesn’t give you THAT feel but neither did De Gea after he arrived at Old Trafford. There was a lot of criticism after the game, people seem to think he’s got a mistake in him but I think every goalkeeper’s got a mistake in him.

“Before we jump on his back let him make a mistake that costs, so far it hasn’t cost. It will take its time, it’s a massive culture shock for him playing in the Premier League.

“Klopp’s been brave, giving him his opportunity and he has to keep him in I believe. We’ve just got to pray he’s the right man, he’s got good qualities but playing in the Premier League isa totlaly different experience.”
