Jan Molby: Why this Liverpool star worries me
The Liverpool legend is worried about Daniel Sturridge's current goal drought
Jan Molby says he is worried about Daniel Sturridge after the Liverpool striker’s slow start to the Premier League season.
The England international failed to register a shot on target on Monday night as Sturridge lasted 60 minutes of Liverpool’s goalless draw with Manchester United.
The former Chelsea and Manchester City forward has started just four of Liverpool’s eight Premier League games so far amid competition from Roberto Firmino for a starting spot.
Sturridge’s enjoyed his most productive season in Liverpool’s colours in the 2013-14 campaign after he netted 21 times in 29 Premier League games alongside Luis Suarez.
Former Reds midfielder Molby believes Sturridge’s injury woes over the past few seasons are finally catching up with the England international.
“Lallana replaced Daniel Sturridge who I do have some worries about,” Molby wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“If you were told a few years ago that Daniel Sturridge would have this kind of drought you wouldn’t have believed it – but it is happening. Coming back injury after injury takes its toll and I think that’s what we’re seeing here now.”
Molby added: “The best he ever played for Liverpool was when he was playing second fiddle to Luis Suarez and he took his positions from the way that Luis played.
“On Monday I think he just struggled a little bit with his positional play, ‘where do I need to be?’, ‘how many runs do I need to make to take defenders away?’ but also ‘I want to stay central because I want to be there if there’s a chance created”.
“He’s just struggling a little bit with his game at the moment and the only cure for that is goals. That’s what you live and breathe as a goalscorer.”
Sturridge moved to Liverpool in a £12m deal from Chelsea in the 2013 January transfer window.
The Liverpool striker has scored 55 times in 99 games in all competitions for the Merseyside outfit during the past three-and-a-half seasons.
Sturridge has previously played for Liverpool’s rivals Chelsea and Manchester City.
