Jermaine Jenas delivers blunt verdict on Chelsea’s title prospects

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder doesn't believe Chelsea can win the Premier League title this season

Jermaine Jenas has poured cold water on talk of Chelsea winning the Premier League title this season.

The Blues made a brilliant start to life under Antonio Conte after three successive top-flight victories over West Ham United, Watford and Burnley.

However, Chelsea failed to win a Premier League in September after a 2-2 draw at Swansea City was followed by emphatic losses to Liverpool and Arsenal.

Conte has managed to bring a sense of calm to the west London club in recent weeks after back-to-back clean sheets thanks to wins against Hull City and reigning champions Leicester City.

The Blues are in fifth place and three points behind current Premier League leaders Manchester City and second-placed Arsenal.

However, former Tottenham midfielder Jenas doesn’t envisage Chelsea winning the Premier League title this season despite making improvements in recent weeks.

“I don’t think Chelsea will challenge for the title. The reality is that they face a battle just to finish in the top four,” Jenas wrote in his Yahoo Sport column.

“Right now Arsenal, along with Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool, all seem to have the edge on them. But that’s not Conte’s fault.”

Jenas added: “The Blues are, essentially, in the same kind of transition period that Manchester United faced when Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford, with a lot of older players at the club.”

Chelsea will host former manager Jose Mourinho on Sunday evening for the first time since the Portuguese coach was sacked by Chelsea in December before taking over the reins at Old Trafford in May.
