John Aldridge: Why I’m not worrried about Liverpool forward being linked with Barcelona

The former Liverpool legend has his say on speculation linking Barcelona with Philippe Coutinho

John Aldridge insists Liverpool shouldn’t be worried about speculation linking Philippe Coutinho with a move to Barcelona.

The Brazil international has made an impressive start to the 2016-17 Premier League season.

Coutinho scored Liverpool’s second goal in a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Anfield on Saturday evening to leave the Reds level on points with leaders Manchester City.

The 24-year-old is Liverpool’s leading goal-scorer this season after scoring four goals and making two assists in nine Premier League games so far.

The Daily Mirror reported in early October that La Liga giants Barcelona were interested in the South American despite Coutinho signing a new long-term deal 18 months ago.

However, Aldridge believes interest from Barcelona or Real Madrid only serves to highlight what a special player Liverpool have on their hands.

“Don’t be surprised to see Philippe Coutinho linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid in the coming weeks,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“And for me, that’s a good thing.

“Only the best players in the world are associated with those teams, and it underlines what an excellent season Coutinho is having.

“What’s more, I still think there’s more to come from the Brazilian.

“With a flick of a switch he can win a game, and the dummy to help create the first goal against West Brom was the ingenuity a team sometimes needs to unlock a defence.

“Long may the links continue. As long as they only remain links, of course.”

Coutinho moved to Liverpool in an £8.5m deal from Serie A giants Inter Milan in the 2013 January transfer window under Brendan Rodgers.
