John Aldridge: Why this new Liverpool signing has impressed me

The former Liverpool striker heaps praise on Jurgen Klopp's summer addition Joel Matip

John Aldridge says he has been impressed with Joel Matip’s positive impact on the Liverpool bench.

The Cameroon international completed a free transfer to the Merseyside outfit from Bundesliga club Schalke 04 in the summer transfer window.

Matip missed the opening two Premier League games of the 2016-17 season due to injury before he made his top-flight debut at White Hart Lane.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in the Premier League since Matip’s introduction to the Liverpool first-team.

The African defender managed to tame Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a goalless draw at Anfield in the Premier League on Monday night.

Former Liverpool striker Aldridge lavished praise on the summer signing ahead of the visit of West Bromwich Albion at Anfield on Saturday evening.

“I have been particularly impressed with Matip, who was my man of the match on Monday and kept Zlatan Ibrahimovic pretty quiet,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“He can also create chances out of defence, as he demonstrated with his pass for Emre Can in the second half.

“When teams sit back, you need someone who can step into midfield from the back.

“In my day, we’d have Alan Hansen bringing the ball out and he’d sometimes get as far as the opposing back four.

“Matip is capable of doing that. When teams play with one or even none up front – as West Brom will on Saturday – it gives a centre-back licence to go upfield.

“Matip is adding an extra dimension to our play.”

Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City.
