Johnny Giles: This is Jose Mourinho’s huge problem at Man United
The former Manchester United midfielder delivers his verdict on the club's record signing Paul Pogba
Jose Mourinho has a huge problem in terms of getting the best out of Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba, according to Johnny Giles.
The Red Devils signed the France international in a world-record £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the summer transfer window.
Pogba impressed on his United debut as the 20-time English champions eased to a 2-0 victory over Southampton at Old Trafford in August.
However, the 23-year-old has struggled to replicate his United form in the Premier League despite establishing him as a regular under Mourinho.
Pogba did open his Premier League account in a 4-1 win over defending champions Leicester City last month as he netted the club’s fourth goal.
Speaking ahead of United’s 4-1 victory over Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday night, Giles claimed that Mourinho still hadn’t worked out Pogba’s best position.
“He has got a huge problem with Paul Pogba. Paul Pogba isn’t doing his stuff,” Giles told Newstalk.
“I don’t think Paul Pogba will ever be the player that Jose Mourinho said he would be at the start of the season – an all-round midfield player.
“He is a talented player who doesn’t know how to play in a responsible position in midfield. He is going to have a big problem there.”
Pogba scored twice in a 4-1 win over their Turkish opponents to make it successive Europa League victories.
The Red Devils are in seventh place in the Premier League table and five points behind leaders Manchester City.
