Johnny Giles: Why Man United will finish above Man City in title race
The former Manchester United midfielder issues his backing for Jose Mourinho
Manchester United will finish above Manchester City in this season’s Premier League title race, according to Johnny Giles.
The Red Devils are in seventh place in the table and five points adrift of leaders City after eight top-flight games so far this season.
Mourinho’s side played out a goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League on Monday night.
City, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Everton at The Etihad last weekend after a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in their final game ahead of the international break.
The 20-time English champions appointed Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May after United missed out on a place in the Champions League.
However, former United midfielder Giles is backing Mourinho to secure sustained success at Old Trafford, questioning City boss Guardiola.
“I think Mourinho will do better long term. What he has done better than anyone else is teach the team to defend,” Giles told Newstalk.
“Mourinho’s team aren’t boring. They’re efficient. I’ve seen in the papers that Mourinho is old fashioned now. He is the best defensive coach in the past 10 years.”
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson secured his 13th top-flight crown.
United will host City in the League Cup at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
