Jose Mourinho comes down hard on his Man United players after Chelsea defeat

The Manchester United boss tells his players that the situation must be dealt with by men, not boys

Jose Mourinho has told his Manchester United players that it is time for them to step up after their 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Chelsea on Sunday.

The Red Devils were thoroughly out-played at Stamford Bridge as Antonio Conte’s men secured a thumping victory and boosted their Premier League title hopes.

The result means that United have taken just two points from the last nine available and left them six points behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League table.

Manchester United are preparing to take on bitter local rivals City at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday night.

And the Portuguese coach has a blunt warning for his players ahead of their cup clash.

Mourinho is quoted as saying by The Daily Express: “There is no way to hide. Our faces speak by themselves. We are really, really sad but again this is not for kids, this is for men and tomorrow we have to be men and work for the next one.

“The millions of fans we have all around the world will obviously have a bad feeling. I feel sorry for that. I have to apologise for that as leader of this dressing room.

“There is only one answer [to the defeat], like I was telling the players. Train and keep fighting. Now we need to win matches.”

Manchester United appointed Mourinho after the Red Devils finished fifth and won the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal last season.

The Red Devils have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge back in 2012-13.
