Juan Mata has paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton, describing the Manchester United legend as an example for footballers to follow.
This week marked the 60th anniversary of Charlton’s debut for the Red Devils and Mata clearly looks up to the former United star as a shining example and role model.
Writing in his personal blog, Mata said: “This week has marked the 60th anniversary of Sir Bobby Charlton’s debut with Manchester United, so it’s a good moment to give thanks to one of the most charismatic figures in the history of this sport.
“In Spain, for instance, when you ask for a legend of English football people keep saying: Bobby Charlton.
“Also, Sir Bobby is one of the best examples of how an extraordinary footballer can keep contributing to our sport and making his name bigger after hanging his boots.”
Charlton made more than 750 first team appearances for the Manchester United first team during his time at Old Trafford, scoring 249 goals in all competitions.
Mata and his Manchester United team-mates are now preparing for their crunch Premier League trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool on Monday night.
The Red Devils are looking to bounce back to winning ways after the disappointment of their 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Old Trafford before the international break.
Jose Mourinho’s men are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table and five points off top spot.
