Jurgen Klopp: How this serious Liverpool player reacted to being dropped

The Liverpool manager says Simon Mignolet will start against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Simon Mignolet has reacted positively in training after Loris Karius was confirmed as Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The Reds signed the Germany Under-21 shot stopper in the summer transfer window after Karius sealed a £4.7m switch from Bundesliga club Mainz.

Mignolet started Liverpool’s opening five Premier League games after the club’s number one broke his right hand during their pre-season tour of United States.

However, Karius was handed his Premier League debut in a 5-1 win over Hull City before he went on to start their games against Swansea City, Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion.

Title rivals Tottenham Hotspur make the trip to Anfield in the League Cup fourth round on Tuesday night.

While Klopp confirmed Mignolet would return to his starting line-up for the visit of Spurs, the Liverpool manager reaffirmed that Karius is his first-choice goalkeeper.

“The chance is at 100 per cent – it’s a good chance! That’s only if nothing happens in training, then he will play 100 per cent,” Klopp said.

“He is a real professional. We’ve had a few talks. It’s not that I had the perfect answer – I could not say ‘you are bad and he is good’ and that’s why he [Karius] is playing.

“It is what I call a luxury problem. It is no problem, we only have to make a decision – and I made the decision. Of course, he was not happy about this, but he is a very serious person and a good professional, so for us it is the most comfortable situation I could imagine that we have these goalkeepers fit and in shape.

“How I said, we’ve had a few talks and everything is good from my side. He is still not happy but nobody can see this in training – he is still working hard, improving, [and doing] all that he has to do and so that’s all OK.”
