Jurgen Klopp: Why I won’t celebrate first anniversary at Liverpool

The Liverpool manager doesn't want any cake....

Jurgen Klopp says he doesn’t want to reflect on his first year as Liverpool manager ahead of his first anniversary at Anfield next week.

The Reds are in fourth place in the Premier League table following their 2-1 victory over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday afternoon after Roberto Firmino and James Milner cancelled out Leroy Fer’s opener.

We will not celebrate, I can tell you that! Hopefully nobody brings me a cake!

The Merseyside outfit are currently second favourites to win the Premier League title after an impressive start to the 2016-17 campaign which has seen Liverpool beat Arsenal, Chelsea and reigning champions Leicester City.

Klopp led Liverpool to a disappointing eighth-place finish in the 2015-16 campaign after the former Borussia Dortmund head coach took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers back in October.

The Liverpool boss did lead the 18-time English champions to two cup finals but the Reds lost to Manchester City in the League Cup before a 3-1 defeat by Sevilla in the Europa League.

Speaking to Liverpool’s website ahead of his first anniversary at Anfield, Klopp explained why he is in no mood to reflect.

“I have no time, and I am not in the mood for reflection, to be honest,” Klopp told Liverpool’s website.

“It’s a year, I’m a year older and all this, but everything else is good. Not perfect, but in a good way. That’s what we hoped, that’s what we said.

“After one year standing here, we can talk like this. There was doubt, there was a lot of rumour around me. People said ‘obviously he was a good coach at Dortmund but a German managing here doesn’t work’ things like this. That’s better now.

“The thing is, I’m not here for a year, I’m here hopefully for the long term, and it means that we have to use all the information we have until now and learn from it.

“That’s how life works, collecting experience, learning from it and being ready for the next challenge.

“My year is what, October 8, yes? We will not celebrate, I can tell you that! Hopefully nobody brings me a cake!”
